Everyone knows them – the Salvo stores – a great way to pick up a bargain or drop off and recycle stuff you no longer need.
But did you know the Salvos spend an average of $5.5 Million a year on rubbish disposal? That’s right – just because you put your old tv out the front (or back) of a Salvos store does not necessarily mean you are doing anyone a favour.
Here is a little reminder of what and what not to donate to the Salvos.
What to donate to the Salvos:
- Quality and clean furniture
- Complete wooden bed frames & clean mattresses
- Bric-a-brac
- CD’s, DVD’s and Videos
- Toys
- Books
- Small electrical items in working order
What NOT to donate to the Salvos (Try recycling them on ReuseMoose instead):
- Stained, torn or broken mattresses and bases
- Stained, torn or broken soft furnishings, including lounge suites, chairs, rugs, mats, curtains etc.
- Carpets and Underfelt
- White Goods – e.g. fridge’s, freezers, washing machines and dryers
- Computers, printers and associated parts
- Broken furniture / Incomplete goods
- Gas, electric or oil heaters
- Gas or electric cook tops or ovens
- Car parts
- Building materials
- Gas bottles and fir extinguishers
- Gas or Electric BBQ
- Commodes
- Motorcycle / Bicycle / Horse riding Helmets
- Baby Cots, Port a Cots, Bassinettes, Playpens, Walkers or High Chairs*
- Children’s car seats, booster seats and baby capsules
- Infants nightwear and jump suits that are not fire rated (must have red fire rating attached)
- Safety belts and children’s restraints
- Swing sets
- Trampolines
- Washing Lines
- Wire mesh beds, water beds and free standing bed heads
*Only accepted if meets Australian Standards (A/S Sticker attached)
